From popular backgrounds among those on the Cali surf scene, Ocean Pacific has established itself as an authentic West Coast brand, embracing the outdoor lifestyle with the signature beach and winter clothing carrying the famous "Op ".
Ocean Pacific was founded by John Smith in the 1960s as a surfboard brand. Smith designed the original brand and logo for his surfboards he sold at his North County Ding Repair store. Later, Fred Ryan bought John Smith's North County Ding Repair along with the Ocean Pacific label. The Ocean Pacific brand was later sold to Don Hansen of Hansen Surf Shop. In 1972, Jim Jenks of San Diego wanted to create clothing that would meet the demands of surfers on and off the waves. He was named after his then-boss Don Hansen and the Ocean Pacific apparel line was created. Jenks's idea for clothing under the Ocean Pacific brand quickly became popular in surf culture with its instantly recognizable "OP" logo.
The Ocean Pacific brand had financial problems in the 1990s. Richard Baker, Doyle & Boissiere investment group bought Ocean Pacific in 1998. Baker remained at Warnaco acquiring Ocean Pacific in 2003 and sold it to the current Iconix Brand Group in 2006.
